What to Expect from Annual GYN Exam

According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, women should start seeing their gynecologist for an annual GYN exam between the ages of 13-15.

These exams are vital to staying healthy and should be attended every year, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

What Is the Purpose of an Annual GYN Exam?

An annual GYN exam is an opportunity for patients to meet with their gynecologist each year to discuss women’s health issues, undergo necessary exams and screenings, determine if there are any existing issues to address, and identify possible risk factors.

What Happens at An Annual GYN Exam?

Your annual GYN exam will begin with a thorough medical history, including family history. At this time, you will also be asked about any current symptoms or health issues.

Next, Dr. Hall will perform a physical exam, which involves a breast exam and a pelvic exam.

During the pelvic exam, an instrument called a speculum is inserted into the opening of the vagina and allows for visualization of the vaginal walls and cervix. A pap test may also be conducted at this time.

In addition, blood samples may be taken to screen for infections or disease.

How Often Do I Need a Pap Test?

Current guidelines recommend that women aged 21-29 should undergo a pap test every three years and that women 30 and older should have a pap test and HPV testing every 5 years.

Do I Still Need to Have an Annual GYN Exam If I’m Not Due for a Pap Test?

It’s important for patients to attend an annual GYN exam each year – even if they are not due for a pap test.
